Longhorns

This is my first registered longhorn cow. Minford Beard gave her to me for doing some photography of his cattle and horses. She was 21 years old when she died. She had raised 17 calves! She came to live with me as a 2 year old. She was well traveled. She went to summer pastures from Kremmling to the Grand Mesa (above Grand Jct.) to her last years on Piceance Creek. She was always gentle, easy to gather and an awesome leader! The one time I was most grateful for her was when we were trying to drive a bunch of beef cows off a steep trail down from Grand Mesa. We could not get the beef cows to go, but she took the lead and they followed!

I would like to dedicate the longhorn page to "Big Steer".  He died this winter (2009) at the age of 21. He was a gentle giant. His purpose was to lead the cattle to and from the summer pasture. I run cattle for other people and the cattle don't know where to go. Big Steer takes the lead and the cattle follow him. It makes for a much easier job when the cattle have a leader. He never got upset, if he could hear me call him from anyplace in the pasture he would come to me.  He was good in the corral too. He never hooked the other cattle with his horns, just waited until it was his turn to get let out of the gate and away he would go. Of course he always knew there was grain as a reward. My friend Jody Pilland will keep his skull so he will always be remembered.  Jody will hang it in his office along with pictures of him thru the years.

Clyde was Big Steer's buddy. Wherever Big Steer went, Clyde was right behind him. It will be interesting to see if Clyde will step up now to be a leader or if he will be lost without Big Steer to follow. He is gentle and easy to work with.
